LAUREL, Miss., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- OncoLogics, Inc. reopened its Laurel doors today, offering the people of Southern Mississippi the highest quality cancer treatment available. The facility has undergone more than one million dollars in renovations, including the installation of radiotherapy equipment that treats malignancies with extraordinary accuracy.
"There are few things more trying to a family than a diagnosis of cancer. At OncoLogics, we are committed to providing our patients with the latest therapies and the most advanced cancer-fighting technology available today. This renovation is a testament to that commitment to our patients and to their success in beating the battle with cancer. Now, our patients can receive advanced care and remain at home with their families and loved ones," said Dr. M. Maitland DeLand, President of OncoLogics.
One of the new services OncoLogics now offers in Laurel is a CT scanner configured for radiotherapy. This scanner will provide doctors with the ability to pinpoint the area to be treated and precisely define nearby critical structures. Information from the CT scanner is then transmitted to a new high-speed computer capable of rapidly designing complex treatment plans. Once the treatment plan is designed, it is sent to a powerful treatment machine called a linear accelerator that allows precise delivery of radiation to the tumor, while minimizing the radiation given to normal tissues.
OncoLogics is also bringing Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) to the Laurel location. This state of the art technology allows the radiation dose to be shaped closely around the tumor, thereby avoiding nearby critical structures.
"Our new radiotherapy facility provides state of the art cancer care that combines high-tech equipment with highly-trained personnel, who have enormous compassion for their patients," said Dr. Cameron Pimperl. "We are constantly looking for better ways to treat the diseased areas without damaging healthy tissue, and this new technology is a powerful tool in ensuring our patients are getting only the necessary amounts of radiation needed to effectively treat their cancer."
The radiotherapy CT scanner and IMRT will provide patients in Laurel with the latest technology in radiation treatment and the greatest chances of cure, while minimizing the side effects of treatment.
