SASKATOON (CP) - After the weekend discovery of a baby on the doorstep of a Saskatoon home, mental health experts are weighing in on what might cause a mother to abandon her newborn that way.
The little girl was discovered bundled in a comforter on Saturday, when the temperature had dipped to -29 C.
Police spokeswoman Alyson Edwards says they believe it was a young mother, possibly a teen, who was "pretty scared."
Dr. Katreena Scott, an assistant professor and clinical psychologist at the University of Toronto, agrees.
Scott says newborn infants are the most likely to be abandoned.
She says one of the reasons for that is that young mothers may have been hiding a pregnancy and don't know what to do once the child is born.
