Butler Named State Public Health Director
By Anchorage Daily News, Alaska
Feb. 5–Dr. Jay Butler, a deputy in the state Division of Public Health, has been named the state’s public health director.
Butler began working for the state in 2005 as state epidemiologist. Last year, he became deputy director for science and medicine.
He had worked for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before taking a state job.
Butler’s connection to the CDC has helped the state prepare for pandemic flu, Health and Social Services Commissioner Karleen Jackson said in a written statement.
Butler replaces Dr. Richard Mandsager as public health director. Mandsager left in November to direct the Providence Children’s Hospital in Anchorage.
