Northwest Association for Biomedical Research Announces NIH Funded Teacher Workshop: The Science and Ethics of HIV Vaccine Research

The Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR) presents the first-of-its-kind HIV vaccine teacher workshop where research scientists working at the forefront of vaccine development, teachers who have helped create and field test our lessons, and members of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network community come together to explore a comprehensive new classroom resource.

"We are very excited to offer this engaging new curriculum centered on standards-based materials that integrate HIV science with ethics and global health," said Susan Adler, Executive Director, NWABR. "Teacher response to this workshop has been overwhelming -- within two days, the class was filled. Our hope is that we will be able to make this program available to many more teachers who are in need of professional development in this important area of scientific research."

The event will begin with a welcome dinner sponsored in part by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and featuring keynote speaker Dr. King Holmes, Director, Department of Global Health at the University of Washington from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. on February 7, 2007. The workshop will follow at the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 8.

Workshop objectives include providing teachers with an understanding of the science behind making an HIV vaccine, the ethical issues involved in clinical trials, and the specific lesson strategies provided by the HIV Vaccine Curriculum. Primary funding for this workshop comes from a Science Education Partnership Award grant from the National Center for Research Resources at the NIH, which allows NWABR to build upon their strong foundation of lesson materials, teacher professional development, and public outreach.
