From the out-of-shape and obese hoping to shape up and shed pounds, to the fit, active person just looking to change things up, there's a new exercise that's fun, effective and best of all welcomes people of ALL ages and fitness levels. It's called Nordic walking. The exercise merges fitness walking with cross country skiing by using specially designed poles, and it's already among the hottest fitness trends in Europe. This week, the Wall Street Journal ran a story highlighting why more Americans should take note of an exercise that "is less stressful, but burns more calories than regular walking."*
Now Nordic walking is quickly growing in popularity here in the US -- where it all started.
"I've been hearing from people for nearly two decades who've experienced major, life-changing improvements in their health," says Tom Rutlin, Nordic walking pioneer who first began introducing others to walking poles in 1988. "This is a low stress exercise that really works, and has the potential to make a significant impact on the health of Americans. I'm thrilled to see more and more people discovering the many benefits of this all-in-one exercise."
Rutlin's life passion has been reinforced by scores of exercise success stories ranging from weight loss (of as much as 200 pounds) to elimination of back pain, and even the reversal of disease symptoms of diabetes and high cholesterol. The "father of Nordic walking" adds, "It's the only total body exercise that's fun, highly effective and that anybody can do year round."
Nordic walkers can burn up to 46% more calories per hour according a study conducted by the Cooper Institute in Dallas, and is ideal for those who are short on time, as it combines total body muscle conditioning with enhanced heart-healthy cardio benefits of fitness walking. Baby boomers especially enjoy the benefits of this low impact, joint-friendly exercise, which eliminates joint stress and pain, especially in the back, hips and knees.
