Shaping America's Health Comments on FDA Approval of Over-The-Counter Weight Loss Drug

Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval for the first over-the-counter weight loss medication. "While Shaping America's Health recognizes this development as an important strategy in combating issues associated with obesity and over weight, it is important that people embrace the fact that proper diet and exercise are the cornerstones of good health. That said, weight loss medications can be an important adjunct to these approaches in those who meet established criteria," said Michael Jensen, MD, Board President, Shaping America's Health and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Endocrine Research Unit.
The mission of Shaping America's Health: Association for Weight Management and Obesity Prevention, is to prevent and treat excess weight and obesity and facilitate a better scientific understanding of weight management. We believe in the concept of HealthStyle -- building a healthy life with positive choices for nutrition, fitness and health management.
Currently, approximately 65 percent, or about 130 million, of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Nearly 60 million U.S. adults are obese and nine million U.S. adults are severely obese. Approximately 90 percent of individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes are overweight.
"What we know is that being overweight or obese increases a person's risk for serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease," Jensen said. "We strive to instill the understanding that losing a modest amount of weight and being physically active can go a long way in improving a person's HealthStyle. It is important to understand that there is no 'magic bullet' for weight loss, and OTC orlistat is no exception."
An FDA approved weight reduction medication, when used properly, can be part of an overall weight management program. As with any over the counter product, consumers must be fully informed about the product's risks and benefits -- particularly if they are part of a population that would be considered at high risk of experiencing significant side effects as a result of other health conditions.
