Albuquerque is the “Fittest City in America” — helped by bicycling, hiking, parks, fitness centers, trails and the climate, says Men’s Fitness magazine.

“That’s why we live here,” said Jean Bannon, riding a tandem bicycle with Doug Schneebeck on the bosque trail Wednesday.

Brad and Debbie Haslam, also bicycling on the trail, said they have no trouble believing Albuquerque is No. 1.

“We use the trail several times a week and see lots of people out here,” Brad said.

Men’s Fitness publishes a list each year of the top 25 cities for fitness. It studies topics ranging from park acreage to TV-viewing habits, gym membership and weather.

Last year, Albuquerque was 13th on the list. The magazine says it has reconsidered Albuquerque because of programs that have been pushed by Mayor Martin Chvez, including an effort that got thousands of people to sign pledges to improve their health through exercise and diet.

It says Chvez tops a list of several mayors who are the best in the country for advocating fitness.

Chvez said Wednesday the article will help promote Albuquerque.

“The city is doing well. I’m very pleased to be riding the wave,” he said.
