Picis ICU Solution Now Live at Veteran's Affairs Medical Center and University of Iowa

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 February 2007, 12:02 CST

Picis, Inc. today announced that Richard L. Roudebush Indianapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics have recently gone "live" with Picis CareSuite™ Critical Care Manager to automate their intensive care units (ICUs). Critical Care Manager automates the patient care process, as well as the documentation of voluminous data produced during critical care stays. This empowers clinicians with near real-time information, supporting efficient delivery of patient care and helping to reduce medical errors. This enables physicians and nurses to focus their time on patients and care quality, and helps to improve decisions while reducing costs in one of the most cost-intensive areas of the hospital.

"In the ICU, we are continually collecting patient data from a variety of sources -- creating thousands of pieces of individual information. Picis Critical Care Manager provides patient data in one, easy-to-access, central location, enabling clinicians to quickly navigate important information to help make more informed decisions," said J. Steven Hata, M.D., associate professor and director, Surgical Intensive Care and Division of Critical Care at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. "Furthermore, the ability to see the patient's ICU record, vital signs, ventilator data, laboratory studies, and medications over the Internet has contributed to more timely interventions."

Critically ill patients in the ICU require the concentrated and continuous attention of caregivers who study vital signs and perform calculations to ensure that proper care is provided. Critical Care Manager automatically documents physiological data from ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps and other medical devices, helping to improve data accuracy and unifying important patient data along with nurse and physician documentation. The technology also provides automated flowsheets, care plans and fluid calculations, enabling physicians and nurses to spend more time caring for the patient.

"Picis Critical Care Manager has provided the foundation to implement and monitor processes of care, such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement ventilator bundle. It provides documentation of performance as well as timely notification of omissions of care," Dr. Hata adds.

The highlights of the recent implementations of Picis Critical Care Manager include:

Richard L. Roudebush Indianapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center utilizes Picis Critical Care Manager to help provide excellence in the treatment of the more than 47,000 patients it cares for annually. The center went "live" with the technology at its two ICU units, which house more than 40 beds. This site also plays a key role in disaster preparedness as a federal designated coordinating center for the National Disaster Medical System. Critical Care Manager is also designed to integrate documentation into the proprietary Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), improving the efficiency of clinical care.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics--one of the nation's largest university-owned teaching hospitals and consistently ranked one of the nation's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report magazine, went live with Critical Care Manager within its more than 760-bed regional referral center and academic medical center. Also, the hospital recently implemented Picis software in its surgical, medical and cardiovascular ICUs, demonstrating the ability of Picis Critical Care Manager to be tailored to each critical care modality.

Picis is scheduled to exhibit at the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Congress in Orlando, booth # 801 (February 17-21).
