ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Altarum Institute announced today that Dr. John J.H. (Joe) Schwarz has joined its board of trustees.
Schwarz, who was most recently a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan's 7th Congressional District (Battle Creek), is a practicing surgeon and a member of the staff of the Battle Creek Health System. He also served four terms in the Michigan Senate where he developed in-depth expertise in health policy.
"Joe brings a needed perspective to our board," said Altarum CEO Ken Baker. "He is a practicing physician who also knows the health policy-making arena at both the state and federal levels. He has an experience-based understanding of what is wrong with today's care delivery systems, and he has the insight and the political acumen to know how real and sustainable systemic change can be implemented. We are very fortunate to have him as part of our team."
Schwarz previously served on the Altarum board of trustees and resigned upon his election to the U.S. Congress.
"These guys have got it right," said Schwarz. "Their history as operations researchers, systems modelers and policy analysts helped them see that we can only solve today's health care mess if we address it as a systems problem. Health care is about many moving parts - among them technology, business process, policy and culture. We have to find a way to optimize the interaction of those components. That will make for a system that delivers high quality care while promoting health for everyone. I see Altarum taking us down that road."
Schwarz joins several other health care professionals on the Altarum board of trustees, including a retired U.S. Air Force surgeon general, the state health officer for the state of Washington and the executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Michigan.
Altarum Institute traces its roots back to 1946 with the founding of the Willow Run Laboratory in Ypsilanti, Mich. It has undergone many changes on its path to a singular focus on providing health systems research, analysis and consulting services. Throughout its evolution, Altarum management and trustees have kept a consistent commitment to remain a vibrant and growing high-tech employer in Michigan. Total revenues for the institute were approximately $60 million in fiscal year 2006.
Altarum Institute is a nonprofit research institution, headquartered in Ann Arbor, Mich. Altarum is working to become the nation's preeminent provider of objective health systems research and solutions.
