African-American Women Underestimate Risk

Posted on: Thursday, 15 February 2007, 18:01 CST

A U.S. survey of African-American breast cancer survivors found the majority do not believe they have an increased chance of developing the cancer again.

The breast cancer survivors are at heightened risk of developing the cancer again and researchers from the University of Pennsylvania suggest it is important that African-American women understand that risk.

Having a personal and family history of breast cancer are known risk factors for breast cancer, and it is surprising and worrisome that most of these women with such a history don't recognize that risk, said the study's lead author, Chanita Hughes Halbert.

The findings are published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
