New Industry Surveys Reveal Pharmaceutical Marketing Focus on Patient-Physician Communications and Physician Support For Patient Feedback

Posted on: Tuesday, 20 February 2007, 09:01 CST

InfoMedics, the patient feedback company, today announced the results of two surveys designed to assess pharmaceutical manufacturers' and physicians' views on patient-physician communications.

The results from the first survey, conducted by PharmaVOICE in December 2006, shows the industry's recognition of the pivotal role effective communications play in improving compliance, in turn leading to better treatment outcomes. Key leading indicators included the following:

1. The biggest benefits of improved patient-physician communications involving a specific brand were perceived by the respondents to be improved treatment outcomes (87.5%) and increased medication adherence (73.6%).

2. The majority of respondents (74.6%) saw medication noncompliance as an ongoing significant issue to be addressed by the pharmaceutical industry in 2007.

3. 67.7% rated their intent to address patient compliance issues in 2007 as extremely or very important, with the majority deeming "Programs that encourage patients to discuss their treatment with their doctor" as the most effective initiatives.

In a second survey InfoMedics conducted its own research about the usefulness of the individual patient treatment feedback reports that physicians receive as part of InfoMedics' programs. Highlights from more than 2,500 physician responses include:

Average usefulness rating: 3.8 out of 5

68% of feedback reports received an usefulness rating of 4 out of 5

88% of reports would be filed

67% of reports would be discussed with patient

63% of reports would be discussed with patient AND filed

"These survey results clearly indicate that physicians recognize patient feedback as a critical component of improved medication compliance and resulting treatment outcomes," said Paul LeVine, InfoMedics' vice president, analytic services. LeVine added, "The really good news is that pharmaceutical manufacturers are now finally addressing the neglected area of patient-physician communications in their promotion planning."
