A nationwide poll of U.S. citizens found that 21 percent of respondents are caring or have cared in the past for an aging parent.
The poll of 1,142 adults, conducted Feb. 8-11, found that 1-in-5 respondents has cared for an elderly parent and 43 percent of those people say that caring for the parent has caused disputes within the family, CBS News reported Tuesday. The poll's margin of error is 3 percentage points.
The poll found that baby boomers, U.S. citizens aged from 45-60 years, are the most likely to be currently caring for aging parents.
The poll also found that 43 percent of respondents are very concerned about having to care for an aging parent in the future and 21 percent are somewhat concerned. That total number of those concerned increases to 72 percent for those under 30 and 73 percent for respondents between 30 and 44.
CBS also said 25 million baby boomers assist aging parents financially and 53 percent of the medical costs amassed by senior citizens are covered by Medicare.
