Doctors Extend Tiny Baby's Hospital Stay

Doctors at a Miami hospital decided Tuesday to keep the baby girl who weighed 10 ounces at birth a few more days.
Amillia Taylor has been in intensive care at Baptist Children's Hospital since her birth four months ago. She survived in spite of being extremely premature, born at 21 weeks and 6 days.
Her weight is up to 4 pounds, the Miami Herald reported.
She's like a real baby now, said Sonja Taylor of Homestead, Amillia's mother. Now I can feel her when I hold her.
Amillia is believed to be the first child to survive after less than 23 weeks gestation and the smallest at birth to pull through.
Dr. William Smalling, a neonatologist at the hospital, called Amillia's survival a miracle.
This is not the norm, he said. Really, greatly, most of these babies don't survive.
The American Academy of Pediatrics does not consider fetuses to be viable at less than 23 weeks.
