InterSystems HealthShare Selected For Long Island Patient Information eXchange
Posted on: Monday, 26 February 2007, 09:01 CST
InterSystems Corporation today announced that the Long Island Patient Information eXchange (LIPIX) has selected InterSystems HealthShare™ for their health information exchange (HIE) initiative. The InterSystems HealthShare HIE platform will be used to integrate and share clinical information across twelve healthcare organizations throughout Long Island, N.Y. The announcement was made at the HIMSS '07 annual conference and exhibition.
InterSystems is a leading provider of innovative database and integration software. The InterSystems product line includes the CACHÉ high performance object database, Ensemble rapid integration software and the HealthShare HIE platform. LIPIX is a regional organization of public and private stakeholders focused on creating an achievable, sustainable and replicable model for integrating and sharing clinical data among Long Island healthcare institutions.
"LIPIX has set aggressive timeframes for the rollout of their patient information exchange project," said Trevor Matz, InterSystems Managing Director, Application Integration. "By providing an extensible set of core services, HealthShare dramatically reduces the cost, risk and time-to-operation for an HIE," Matz said. "HealthShare includes the comprehensive functionality and rapid application development capabilities that LIPIX will require to achieve its objectives."
Sophisticated Technology, Physician-Friendly Design
"InterSystems HealthShare offers a rich set of standards-based capabilities that we're going to need at LIPIX, combined with a physician-friendly design that will enable rapid adoption throughout our RHIO," said Dr. Benjamin Stein, Director of Clinical Information Systems at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (LIJ).
"InterSystems' focus on rapid development and the value that HealthShare offers were also major factors in our HIE software decision," Stein noted.
Development of the LIPIX response to the Heal NY Phase 1: Health Information Technology Grant was completed under the direction of North Shore-LIJ, a LIPIX stakeholder.
Over the two-year period covered by the grant, the LIPIX project will encompass:
Development and use of a regional Meta-Master Patient Index to enable patient identification across multiple institutions and to provide patient indexing and identification for patients seen within each organization;
Implementation of a Web-based clinical data exchange (CDE) system that will deliver measurable benefits to providers, patients and payers;
Enhancement of clinical information systems by LIPIX participating entities in order to strengthen potential CDE opportunities.
"There is no doubt that this HIE initiative presents some major challenges," Stein noted. "However, it offers the potential for major improvements in healthcare quality and patient safety along with a dramatic reduction in inappropriate utilization and associated cost."
Phase 1 of the LIPIX implementation will enable CDE for a patient population estimated at about two and half million people, according to Stein. The next phase will hope to expand coverage to serve approximately five million people throughout the Long Island area as well as the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.
"We welcome the opportunity to work with LIPIX to enable the delivery of improved quality and safety of care throughout the patient population this RHIO will serve," said Matz.
"The selection of HealthShare by LIPIX follows closely on a decision by the Central Florida RHIO to use HealthShare to enable its information exchange," noted Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. "RHIOs throughout the U.S. are moving rapidly to begin building CDE systems and InterSystems is well positioned to deliver the HIE technology needed by this growing market," he said.
