Initiate Systems Inc., the recognized standard in enterprise master person index (EMPI) software in the healthcare industry, today announced that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is replacing its existing EMPI solution with Initiate Identity Hub™ software to help facilitate interoperability across its many disparate systems and to provide interactive delivery of patient information. UPMC will deploy Initiate Identity Hub™ software in its efforts to enhance patient care and ensure that patients are connected to their accurate medical histories while streamlining administrative processes.

“We want to provide our doctors and clinicians with access to the most complete and accurate patient data. To accomplish this, we need a real-time EMPI solution that works across our integrated network of hospitals, physician practices, other care sites and a health plan,” said Paul Sikora, UPMC vice president of information technology transformation. “Initiate Systems was the only vendor that could scale to meet our increasingly demanding needs for accurate patient identification, reduction of data duplication, and interoperability with other systems.”

UPMC, which has been named one of the 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems in the United States by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine for eight consecutive years, is the premier health system in western Pennsylvania and one of the most renowned academic medical centers in the country. The health system is composed of 19 hospitals, 400 outpatient sites and doctor’s offices, retirement and long-term care facilities, an insurance plan and international ventures.

In addition to accurately consolidating patient data from dozens of source systems, UPMC desired an EMPI offering that could be rapidly deployed with no disruption to existing processes, and could leverage its investment in dbMotion’s medical informatics solution. UPMC recently partnered with dbMotion, an award-winning provider of Web-based data-sharing and integration technology, in an $84 million initiative to create one of the largest models of true interoperability in healthcare.

“UPMC already understood the benefits of an EMPI solution. It was looking for a partner that could address its technology requirements and help meet current and future business objectives,” said Scott Harper, senior vice president and general manager, healthcare practice, Initiate Systems. “UPMC is one of the most prestigious healthcare organizations in the country, and working with them is further validation that Initiate Systems is the most advanced EMPI offering on the market.”
