Programs Help Faithful Observe the Lenten Season

Many area Christian faith communities offer programs during Lent to deepen the spiritual aspects of the season. Here are some that are available:

Christ Lutheran

Church (ECLA)

1701 Arroyo Chamiso. Visit the Web site at www.clcsantafe.com or call 983-9461.

* Sunday services are at 8 and

10 a.m. This Sunday, Pastor Benjamin Larzelere will discuss “What or Who Was/Is the Devil?”

* At 9 a.m. Sunday, the Sunday School and Confirmation Class meet.

* At 6 p.m. Wednesdays, a midweek Soup Supper is held in the Common Room. While the meal is eaten in silence, a book is read to those who attend. This year’s book is The Sins of Scripture by Bishop John Shelby Spong.

* At 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Lenten Evening Prayer.

St. Anne

Catholic Church

* Mass is celebrated at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays; at

7 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; at 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Fridays; at

6 p.m. Saturdays; at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m.; 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays.

* Stations of the Cross will be held after the 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Friday services.

* Confession (Rite of Reconcilliation) will be heard after all services — Monday through Friday — during Lent. Saturday confessions will be heard at 4 p.m.

Lutheran Church

of the Servant

* Sunday services are at 10 a.m.

* At 6 p.m. Wednesdays, a Lenten evening prayer service will be held, followed by a soup-and-bread supper.

Zia United

Methodist Church

3368 Governor Miles Road. Call 471-0097.

* A prayer and healing class titled “Stretch Out Your Hand” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays during Lent. Pastor Bethany Carpenter will lead this class.

Healers from the Zia congregation will share their gifts as well. The class are open to the public.

St. Bede’s

Episcopal Church

1601 S. St. Francis Drive at San Mateo. Call 982-1133.

* During Lent, the topic for Sunday Adult Forums will be Celtic Christianity. Philip Newel’s Listening to the Heartbeat of God will be the text for the discussions.

First Presbyterian Church

208 Grant St. Visit the Web site at www.santafefirstpresby.org or call 982-8544.

* At 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in Pope Hall, a light supper will be served. From 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. a program on prayer will be held. The goal of the progam is to increase understanding and knowledge of prayer.

This Wednesday’s topic is “the Evolution of Personal Prayer.” It will be presented by Chuck and Ann Smith.

Cathedral Basilica

of St. Francis of Assisi

131 Cathedral Place. Call 982-5619.

* Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 5:15 Monday through Friday.

* Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m. and at 5:15 p.m. on Saturdays.

* Mass will be celebrated at

8 and 10 a.m., noon and 5:15 p.m. on Sundays

* Stations of the Cross will be held following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Fridays.

* A Lenten Mission with the Deacon Eloy Martinez of St. John the Baptist Parish at the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo will be held this Monday through Thursday at the 5:15 p.m. celebration of Mass.

He will discuss the theme of the mission: “Our Faith Journey with Jesus and Mary Continues as We Intensify Our Love for Them.” Priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation following the Mass.

*”The Passion Play” will be performed by the Youth Group of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Bernalillo following the celebration of the

5:15 p.m. Life Teen Mass on Sunday.

The public is invited to this free event.
