DeKalb Medical Center implemented Sunrise Clinical Manager as part of an organizational initiative called QUEST (Quality, Uniformity, Efficiency and Safety through Technology) with the goal to make its healthcare delivery safer, more effective and more efficient by reducing medical errors and clinician variability. To track the success of the project, DeKalb Medical Center’s Institute for Quality developed a benefits scorecard to measure how the implementation was improving care outcomes. The scorecard tracked baseline data prior to implementation and measured change related to system activation.
Using Sunrise Clinical Manager’s computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system, evidence-based order sets and automated dosing to support safe and efficient medication ordering processes and workflows, DeKalb Medical Center achieved the following reduction in medication error rates:
— 66 percent reduction in medication administration-related errors including wrong person, wrong drug and wrong route — 89 percent reduction in medication-related errors such as duplicate medication orders and errors of omission — 80 percent reduction in errors associated with delayed medication administration
Timely notification of critical blood levels for ante partum women is an important element for providing high-quality obstetric care. By using Sunrise Clinical Manager to streamline ordering and results notification, DeKalb Medical Center was able to deliver these critical lab results in a more timely fashion with a:
— 25 percent reduction in STAT lab tests turnaround times — 35 percent reduction in STAT lab orders over 60 minutes
“The Eclipsys CPOE system has been very easy to use and improved the efficiency of my care delivery so I can spend more meaningful time with my patients,” said Michael Quinones, MD, chief of general surgery, DeKalb Medical Center. “With the implementation of Sunrise Clinical Manager, DeKalb Medical Center is providing the technology that makes me feel confident I am delivering the best possible care.”
The Eclipsys implementation also led to improved productivity and process efficiencies at DeKalb Medical Center. By providing clinicians immediate access to patient results and medication orders, DeKalb Medical Center was able increase the number of patients discharged by noon by 22 percent, which resulted in a reduced overall length of stay. Additionally, by automating medication orders, there has been a 40 percent decrease in administrative pharmacy phone calls, thus giving clinicians more time to provide direct patient care.
“Eclipsys has been a great partner helping DeKalb Medical Center achieve high levels of solution adoption and develop a system that not only enables us to achieve improved outcomes, but also to replicate these successes at other care units to achieve similar results,” said Steve Meurer, chief quality officer, DeKalb Medical Center. “This will enable DeKalb Medical Center to provide the same standard of excellent care across all of our units at each facility where Sunrise Clinical Manager is deployed.”
“DeKalb Medical Center’s improved patient safety is a great representation of what can be achieved when a healthcare organization commits to using technology as a mechanism to improve patient-care outcomes,” said Diane Bradley, MD, Eclipsys chief quality and outcomes officer. “Eclipsys’ proven methods begin with early identification of opportunities, dissemination of best practices, ongoing measurement of success and goal refinement. This Eclipsys time-tested methodology combined with high-rates of clinician adoption of Eclipsys solutions enables healthcare providers of all sizes and disciplines to improve outcomes in care, cost and satisfaction.”
