BOCA RATON, Fla, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ — Spirit of Women Health Network and “Carlos by Carlos Santana” footwear announce today the launch of the Red Shoe Celebrity Auction, an online auction of celebrity-autographed footwear to benefit several health organizations including the Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) Coalition.

“It’s exciting to have Carlos Santana’s organization and other celebrities join our fight against heart disease, which has now been the number one killer of American women for nearly a century,” said Josh Davis, president, Spirit of Women.

Throughout the year, celebrities will autograph one shoe from each pair of red shoes that have been donated by “Carlos by Carlos Santana” footwear, and individuals will be able to bid on the shoes through Ebay. All shoes will also be on display at http://www.spiritofwomen.com/redshoe, where the public can sign-up to receive updates on celebrity shoe-signings. The auction will conclude during National Cholesterol Awareness Month in September as part of Spirit of Women’s Peripheral Arterial Disease Screenings program.

The auction is the national cornerstone of “The Red Shoe Initiative”, which aims to encourage women on a local level throughout the year to take action against cardiovascular disease and strokes, just as its sister program, the “Red Dress Project,” successfully raises national awareness of heart health for women.

In addition to the online auction, “The Red Shoe Initiative” will include local “Red Shoe” events in communities across the United States throughout the year. Each event will take on the flair and character of each community that serves as a host. These events will consist of evening receptions, fashion shows, and various events in skating rinks and other venues that encourage women to take action for their heart health.

About Day of Dance for Cardiovascular Health

“Day of Dance for Cardiovascular Health” events will be hosted by more than 50 affiliate hospitals of the Spirit of Women Hospital Network. Lasting from four to six hours, the events will include dancing, physician speakers, screenings, tips on healthy cooking and stress reduction, and other activities to remind participants that heart disease prevention can be a fun and energizing experience. For a list of participating hospitals, go to http://www.dayofdance.org/.

Heart Disease in Women

Nearly 500,000 women die each year of cardiovascular disease, which has been the number one killer of American women since 1908. Today, heart disease kills more women than men each year, and six times more women than breast cancer.

Peripheral Arterial Disease

More than 12 million Americans have peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.), a disease that affects the arteries outside the heart. P.A.D. can decrease blood flow to the legs and feet that can result in muscle fatigue and pain when walking and lead to amputation, disability and diminished quality of life. People with P.A.D. have a two- to six-fold increased risk of death from heart attack and stroke. For more information visit http://www.padcoalition.org/

The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign on women and heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Heart Truth introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2003.
