New Non-Invasive Treatment Option for Lung Cancer Patients Offered By CyberKnife Center of Miami

Posted on: Friday, 2 March 2007, 10:29 CST

MIAMI, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A new treatment option for lung cancer patients eliminates the need for invasive placement of radiographic markers during radiosurgery. The Xsight Lung Tracking System now in use by CyberKnife Center of Miami, registers directly to the tumor to track, detect, and correct for tumor movement in real time throughout the treatment. Previously, a "fiducial" or gold seed marker was necessary to track the tumor during radiosurgery treatment.

According to Dr. James G. Schwade, Executive Director of CyberKnife Centers of Miami and Palm Beach, "This development allows us to actually offer the latest technology to our patients allowing for completely non-invasive treatment options. We are the second medical facility in the U.S. to utilize the Xsight Lung Tracking System."

The CyberKnife system is the only one that uses internal anatomy to directly track targets using both the Xsight Lung Tracking System and Synchrony Respiratory Tracking Systems making radiosurgery completely non- invasive. The CyberKnife(R) represents an entirely new approach to radiosurgery. The CyberKnife is not a knife at all, but a sophisticated radiation tool that, like the surgeon's scalpel, can effectively eradicate tumors and lesions. It can deliver an atomic bomb's dose of radiation to a very precise target through a laser beam, effectively killing the cancer cells.

The CyberKnife can perform this surgery with: - No incision - No blood - No anesthesia - No pain - No recovery or rehabilitation time for medically inoperable cancer patients.

The CyberKnife Centers are free standing open centers not affiliated with any hospital, and allow for certified and trained physicians to treat patients. Training is available at the CyberKnife Center of Miami, for any physician or surgeon interested in treating patients.
