Alzheimer’s Services 14th Conference Focus to Be Strategies for Managing Dementia
Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area will hold its 14th annual conference, “Total Dementia Care: Mind, Body & Soul,” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 7 at the Catholic Life Center.
Dr. Michelle Bourgeois, professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Florida State University, will present the keynote address, “Mind: Memory & Communication Strategies for Persons with Dementia,” at 9 a.m.
Bourgeois has received numerous grants from the National Institute of Aging to investigate interventions for spousal and nursing home caregivers designed to improve the quality of communicative interactions with residents with dementia. Her Memory Book Treatment has been featured on a nationally syndicated public television program titled “Agewise – Living Better.”
Other sessions will include “Body: Stay-Fit Strategies” by Rachael Feirman at 11 a.m., “Soul: Memory Book Workshop” by Bourgeois at 1 p.m. and “Body: Research Update” by Robert P. Hammer at 2:45 p.m. Feirman is the Balance and Fall Program coordinator for BRPT Lake Rehabilitation Centers. Hammer, William A. Pryor professor of chemistry at LSU, is a 2006 recipient of the “Scientific American” 50 Award for his work in Alzheimer’s research.
The day will also include exhibits, a continental breakfast and a box lunch.
The conference is designed for health-care professionals and family caregivers of people with dementia. Continuing education credit will be offered for health-care professionals.
Registration through today is $90 for health-care professionals and $30 for family members. Add $20 for late registration after today.
