Pregnant Women on Prescribed Bed Rest Have New Exercise Option

Posted on: Monday, 5 March 2007, 06:00 CST

AUSTIN, Texas, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Exercise during pregnancy is safe and beneficial for both mothers and babies. Low-risk pregnant women may walk, swim, or attend fitness classes modified for pregnant women.

Darline Turner-Lee, founder of Next Step Fitness, Inc., (http://www.nextstepfitness.com/) saw that pregnant women on prescribed bed rest had no exercise program available to help them maintain strength or muscle tone. She created Bedrest Fitness, an exercise DVD, to address this need.

"When three of my friends were prescribed bed rest, I realized that they would have a really hard time laboring and delivering after a long period of inactivity," says Turner-Lee, physician assistant, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Specialist(R) and certified perinatal fitness instructor. "Yet I found no exercise programs addressed to this population."

Doctors prescribe bed rest for approximately 700,000 pregnant women annually with high risk pregnancies. Prescribed bed rest can range from limited activity to complete confinement to bed. As a result of inactivity pregnant women become physically weak, easily fatigued and many even become depressed.

Bedrest Fitness is a set of exercises modified specifically for pregnant women on prescribed bed rest. Most of the exercises can be done while lying down in bed, and they adhere to the guidelines for exercise during pregnancy set forth by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and ACSM.

Women who regularly perform the exercises can:

-- Maintain muscle strength and tone -- Prevent blood clots from forming in the legs -- Prepare the muscles of the abdominopelvis and perineum for labor and delivery -- Recover from labor and delivery more quickly

Next Step Fitness, Inc. is an emerging source of women's health information ranging from maternity to menopause. Founder Darline Turner-Lee holds a BS from Tufts University, a Master of Health Science degree from Duke University. She practiced as a physician assistant in family and internal medicine and women's health before starting her own company. Though not prescribed bed rest, Turner-Lee had high risk pregnancies and had her daughter at age 37 and her son at age 40.

Bedrest Fitness includes a resistance band and retails for $24.95 plus tax and shipping.
