Mar. 5–March is National Nutrition Month. “Diet and health fads come and go and some may offer short term results,” states a news release, “but for long term health benefits South Dakota(ns) are encouraged to go 100 percent Fad Free for National Nutrition Month.”

Lisa Rose, R.N., Brown County Community Health Center advises that a balance of physical activity combined with a diet rich in a variety of foods based on the new Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid provide safe and lasting benefits.

Rose recommends that people should be cautious about health claims or products that seem to be too good to be true, offer quick fixes or claim that certain foods are good or bad.

The following suggestions for a balanced approach to healthy living:

–Develop an eating plan for lifelong health. Get back to basics and use the Dietary Guidelines 2005 and MyPyramid at www.mypyramid.gov as a guide.

–Choose foods sensibly. A single food or meal doesn’t make or break a healthful diet. When consumed in moderation, all foods can fit into a healthful diet.

–Learn how to spot a food fad. Unreasonable or exaggerated claims that eating or not eating specific foods, nutrition supplement or combinations of foods may cure diseases or offer quick weight loss are features of fad diets.

–Find a balance between food and physical activity. Regular physical activity is important for overall health and fitness, plus it helps control body weight and promotes a feeling of well-being.

–Food and nutrition misinformation can have harmful effects on health and wallet.
