Consumers Now Have a New Way to Get Hip to Bone Health

GOLDEN, Colo., March 5 /PRNewswire/ — Early this year, Horizon Organic(R) Fruit-on-the-Bottom yogurt varieties were enhanced with NutraFlora(R) prebiotic fiber, joining other lines of Horizon Organic yogurt containing the short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS(R)) prebiotic dietary fiber. NutraFlora(R) has been shown to significantly increase calcium absorption, an important component in building and maintaining strong bones.

“We know that our customers are continually seeking new ways to improve their health through dietary habits,” said Susan Lintonsmith, vice president and general manager of Horizon Organic. “By adding this natural ingredient, which aids in calcium absorption, we are making it easier for our customers to take a simple step that will ultimately benefit their overall health.”

A recent study conducted by Opinion Research Corporation for GTC Nutrition found that, even though calcium is critical for building bone mass, more than half (55 percent) of the 1,031 survey respondents were unaware that the body only absorbs a small percentage — 30 percent — of the calcium available in the typical diet. The study also found that the majority of those surveyed greatly underestimate the risks associated with poor bone health. Eighty-six percent of Americans believe that women are more likely to develop breast, ovarian or uterine cancer than fractures linked to osteoporosis. In fact, a woman is more likely to experience an osteoporotic fracture than develop any of the three forms of cancer (National Osteoporosis Foundation).

“These survey findings, while concerning, underscore the opportunity Americans have to increase their overall health and wellbeing by learning more about bone health and the factors that influence it, including calcium absorption,” said Coni Francis, Ph.D., R.D., scientific affairs manager for GTC Nutrition. “Our goal is to help consumers be more aware of the risks and also realize the easy choices they can make in the supermarket aisle to help build stronger bones.”

Building strong and healthy bones requires not only consuming a diet rich in calcium, Dr. Francis said, but also taking steps to ensure sufficient calcium is absorbed. With the inclusion of NutraFlora(R) in Horizon Organic’s Fruit-on-the-Bottom yogurt line, increasing calcium absorption has never been easier or tastier. Something as simple as enjoying a healthy and flavorful Fruit-on-the-Bottom yogurt each day can help to build bone mass and support bone health. Consumers can easily spot products that contain NutraFlora(R) by looking for the green NutraFlora(R) seal on the packages of Horizon Organic’s Fruit-on-the-Bottom yogurt.

About the Survey

The survey was conducted for GTC Nutrition by Opinion Research Corporation in November 2006. Respondents included 1,031 adults in the U.S. who were contacted by telephone and asked to provide unaided and aided responses to questions concerning bone health.
