GSK's Vaccine Protects Against Bird Flu

Global drug giant GlaxoSmithKline said Monday new data indicate its bird-flu vaccine protects against different strains of the virus.
GSK said the data, which were presented at the International Symposium on Respiratory Viral Infections in Hong Kong, indicate its vaccine may help prevent a flu pandemic.
The data confirm that our pre-pandemic influenza vaccine has the ability to recognize and kill an H5N1 strain that is different to the one contained in the vaccine, said Jean Stephenne, president of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, the company's vaccine division.
This means that proactive administration of our pre-pandemic vaccine before or just after the start of the pandemic could help to substantially slow down the spread of disease.
In one study, GSK's vaccine, which contains an antigen from the Vietnam strain of H5N1, elicited a strong antibody response in humans against the Indonesian strain of the flu virus. The effect was 25 times greater when an adjuvant was used in conjunction with the vaccine.
