Posted on: Monday, 5 March 2007, 15:00 CST
OAK PARK, Mich., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Women's lung health will be the theme of a conference and luncheon Wednesday, April 18, 2007 hosted by the American Lung Association of Michigan. The day-long event will be held at the Troy Marriott Hotel.
The conference and luncheon are part of a year-long, statewide campaign to raise awareness about women's lung health and funds for research, education and advocacy.
-- Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women and will kill more than 70,000 women this year - more than breast cancer, cervical cancer and ovarian cancer combined. -- Women have a higher asthma prevalence rate than men. -- Nearly 10,000 Michigan women are living with life-threatening lung- related illnesses, such as lung cancer, asthma, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Thousands more have died from these diseases, all of which affect women more frequently and more severely than their male counterparts.
Throughout the day, there will be speakers on topics of interest to laypersons and medical professionals. The American Thoracic Society, accredited by the ACCME, designates this activity to provide continuing medical education for medical professionals.
Sessions will focus on lung cancer and women, COPD, healthy homes, hazards of mainstream industry personal care and cosmetics products, tobacco marketing to women, nutrition, smoking cessation, clean air, asthma, infections and pulmonary hypertension.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the conference will feature exhibits, and the presentation of the first Women's Lung Health Champion Award to Julia Hansen, author of A Life in Smoke.
Cost of the Catch Your Breath: Women's Lung Health Conference and Luncheon is $65 per person for those who register before March 26. More information can be found on the conference Web site: http://www.catchyourbreathmi.org/. Registration and payment also can be made on the Web site.
