Find B-Movie Fun in ‘Bat Monsters’
By WARREN EPSTEIN, THE GAZETTE
“Attack of the Bat Monsters” (1999) — A discussion on my film blog (cosprings film.blogspot.com) about the best B movies made me think about this hilarious tribute to Roger Corman.
Corman, who wrote “Little Shop of Horrors,” which is playing at the Fine Arts Center, was the king of the B’s. Give the man a couple thousand bucks and a rubber monster get-up, and the guy could give you a reason to go to the drive-in.
The indie “Attack of the Bat Monsters” both honors and spoofs Corman’s work, throwing a Corman-like director (Fred Ballard) into a situation in which he must make a monster movie in three days.
He has an empty rock quarry, but no script or monster suit, and a gladiator crew is trying to muscle in on his turf. Funny stuff.
