Prilosec OTC
Product: Prilosec OTC, 14 tablets, $10.99
Key ingredients: 20 milligrams of omeprazole.
The pitch: Relieves chronic heartburn and acid reflux disease.
How it works: Omeprazole is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors that decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach.
Pros: Prilosec was found as effective in treating heartburn and acid reflux disease as prescription drugs costing almost 10 times more, according to an analysis released in January by Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs, a public education project of Consumers Union. Generally insurers don’t pay for nonprescription drugs, but many have chosen to help pay for Prilosec, which was the first proton pump inhibitor approved for sale over the counter.
Cons: While this class of drugs is generally safe, early studies raised concerns about a possible link between the drugs and a higher risk of pneumonia and infection with a bacterium called C. difficile. In addition, a study published in December 2006 found that use of proton pump inhibitors for more than a year may be associated with an increased risk of hip fractures. People aren’t supposed to take Prilosec OTC for more than two weeks at a time without doctor’s supervision. Side effects include dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, increased gas or bloating or itching. People experiencing more serious side effects, such as swelling in the face, seizures and hives or itching, should call their doctor.
Bottom line: Prilosec can help chronic heartburn sufferers. People who have it less than once a week should try milder antacids, such as Mylanta or Rolaids, or acid-reducing drugs, such as Pepcid or Tagamet.
