LifeNet's New Meniscus Implant for Knee Surgeries Helps One Hundred Patients

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 March 2007, 12:00 CDT

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., March 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- LifeNet, a leading biomedical engineering allograft agency, announces that its Allowash(R) Meniscus Specialty Allograft was implanted in the 100th patient. This product is available for knee surgeries to treat leg pain and mobility problems. LifeNet is the only tissue bank that provides processed frozen meniscus.

The new Allowash(R) Meniscus Specialty Allografts feature a C-shaped cartilage cushion that can be transplanted into the knee. This implant will help the joint bear weight, glide, and turn. Potential patients are usually missing more than half of their meniscus due to surgery or injury, including tears that cannot be repaired. LifeNet is able to provide the Allowash(R) Meniscus Allografts to surgeons throughout the U.S.

"With increased availability and comparable clinical patient outcomes, frozen meniscal allografts have become my graft of choice when it comes to meniscus transplantation," said John Klimkiewicz, MD, Georgetown University Hospital.

"An Allowash(R) Meniscus Specialty Allograft presents a solution to an individual who wants to remain physically active after a sports injury. Our product provides the safety record of AlloWash(R) and offers that extra level of confidence for the surgeon. We know this implant can make a difference in a patient's health," says Craig Wolf, LifeNet Product Manager of Sports Medicine.

LifeNet's Meniscus Allografts are processed using its patented Allowash(R) technology. The Allowash(R) process removes virtually all of the cellular elements of bone, thereby, providing an additional line of defense against emerging infections diseases.

LifeNet's CEO Rony Thomas states, "LifeNet is advancing the marketplace and we strive to be the innovation leader, but safety is always our top priority with every biomedical implant we provide. Patients can be assured that the new Allowash(R) Meniscus Allografts are designed with their needs and concerns in mind."

Since 1995, LifeNet has distributed 1.5 million biomedical implants with no incidence of disease transmission linked to tissue screened and processed by LifeNet. This year will highlight LifeNet's 25 years of service to the medical community. "Surgeons and nurses can depend on us. We offer high- quality and safe biomedical implants in order to help restore health," adds Thomas.

LifeNet, founded in 1982, is a full service biomedical tissue banking system and a leading non-profit organ and tissue donation agency whose mission is saving lives and restoring health. LifeNet provides recovery and processing services for musculoskeletal and cardiovascular tissues, distributing more than 200,000 biomedical implants every year to restore health to patients around the world.
