Sutter Health and CPMC Approve Plan for Innovative New Hospital Boards of Directors Give Green Light to State-of-the-Art Facility

The Sutter Health and California Pacific Medical Center Boards of Directors have given approval to build a pioneering $1.7 billion hospital in San Francisco.
The new 455 bed hospital, to be located at the site of the Cathedral Hill Hotel on Van Ness Avenue, represents the first new acute care facility to be built in San Francisco in 40 years. It will offer a state-of-the-art emergency department, surgical and intensive care units to handle the most complicated medical conditions, and a new Women's and Children's Center. For patients and families, the facility will feature all private rooms. For physicians and staff, the facility will incorporate leading edge technology and the most progressive design elements.
"The foundation for this new, world class hospital has been created over the past six years," said Scott Minnick, Chairman of the Board of California Pacific Medical Center. "The perseverance, planning and passionate commitment to serving our patients' needs have certainly paid off: we are delighted to be able to take this off the drawing board, and move it into the real world."
The new hospital will meet state seismic mandates, support the City's Van Ness redevelopment initiatives, and solidify San Francisco's position as a destination for best-in-class care. Importantly, the project will be developed with no increase in taxes for San Franciscans. The immediate next step will involve working with the city toward project approval and entitlement.
"We are looking forward to partnering with political, civic and community leaders, as well as our neighbors, to make sure the city gets the best possible earthquake-safe hospital," said Martin Brotman, M.D., President and CEO of California Pacific Medical Center. "We recognize there is important work ahead before the first patient is admitted to our new hospital, but we are confident that through constructive collaboration, we can make that day a reality."
Recently named one of the Top 50 Hospitals in the U.S. by the Leapfrog Group, California Pacific serves patients from all over California, the U.S., and internationally. The Medical Center's hospitals have been vital members of the San Francisco community for over 150 years. The organization, comprising a medical staff of over 1,600 physicians and over 6,600 nurses and staff, is the second largest private employer in the region.
State seismic standards require that a substantial portion of California's healthcare infrastructure be retrofitted or replaced over the next decade. California Pacific has embraced these safety requirements as a point of departure for modernizing its system.
"This is wonderful news for the people of San Francisco, California Pacific Medical Center and Sutter Health," said Pat Fry, President and CEO of Sutter Health. "San Francisco is a world class city and it deserves a world class medical facility that will deliver the highest quality care for decades to come."
California Pacific Medical Center
At San Francisco's California Pacific Medical Center, we believe in the power of medicine. We research the most up-to-date treatments, hire the most qualified individuals, and practice the most modern, innovative medicine available. We deliver the highest quality expert care with kindness and compassion in acute, post-acute and outpatient services, as well as preventive and complementary medicine. But we also believe that medicine alone is only part of the solution. That's why we look intently at each individual case and treat the whole person, not just the illness. It's why we go beyond medical care and provide our patients with things like disease counseling, family support, and wellness treatments. As one of California's largest private, community based, not-for-profit, teaching medical centers, and a Sutter Health affiliate, we are able to reach deep into our community to provide education, screening, and financial support in some of the city's most underserved neighborhoods. Because medicine can transform a body. But going beyond medicine can transform a life. www.cpmc.org
