BodyMedia Launches the SenseWear(R) Display for Clinicians and Their Patients With Metabolic Disorders

Posted on: Friday, 23 March 2007, 18:00 CDT

NEW ORLEANS, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- BodyMedia, Inc., the pioneer of metabolic assessment and behavioral therapy technologies, announced today it has launched the SenseWear(R) display, the newest advancement to the SenseWear(R) Body Monitoring System, at the American College of Cardiology 56th Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans. Ideally suited for patients with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity and diabetes, the SenseWear(R) display increases patient access to health data such as calories burned, physical activity and sleep so health professionals can monitor adherence to their behavioral prescriptions. Patients and their physicians can use the data to identify the behaviors that best promote weight loss and healthy living, ultimately lowering the risks associated with their chronic conditions. The new SenseWear(R) display is a convenient enhancement. It displays up-to-the minute health metrics from the armband and can be worn as a watch or clipped to the patient's clothing, making this essential data constantly accessible.

"With the SenseWear(R) Body Monitoring System, patients and physicians have a tool that accurately translates how personal day-to-day activities impact the progress they are making towards managing disease and achieving a healthy lifestyle," said Dr. Bret Goodpaster, Department of Clinical Exercise Physiology at the University of Pittsburgh. "For patients who want up-to-the- minute access to health data, the SenseWear(R) display makes it even easier to monitor activities and remain constantly aware of how their behaviors are affecting their bodies."

BodyMedia also announced the recent results from a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirming that the SenseWear(R) armband is an accurate metabolic monitoring device for individuals in a free- living environment. The study compared SenseWear(R) to the doubly labeled water method, considered the gold standard in measuring energy expenditure (EE), and found that the SenseWear(R) armband offers similar accuracy.

"These study results are yet another addition to the growing body of clinical evidence that point to the benefits of the SenseWear(R) Body Monitoring System as an accurate and effective disease management tool," said Dr. Donna Wolf, Manager of Clinical Research at BodyMedia. "As the only device of its kind that gives physicians access to a range of lifestyle data, the SenseWear(R) Body Monitoring System is ideally suited for addressing the behavior modification needs of the millions of patients with chronic health conditions such as CVD, obesity and diabetes."
