Study: Value of Arterial Stents Limited

Posted on: Tuesday, 27 March 2007, 21:00 CDT

A U.S. study finds that arterial stents appear to provide little long-term benefit to many heart disease patients.

The researchers said they found that patients who received stents to open arteries in addition to drug treatment had the same life expectancy and the same number of heart attacks as those who received only drugs, The New York Times reported. The stents improved blood flow and relieved symptoms like shortness of breath, but the symptom relief did not last.

When I saw the results, I was incredulous, said Dr. William E. Boden, of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Boden was the lead author of a report published online in The New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers also presented their results Monday at an American College of Cardiology meeting in New Orleans.

The study tracked 2,300 patients, most of them with a slowly progressing form of coronary artery disease.
