Study: Type 2 Diabetes Linked to Parkinson's

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 March 2007, 18:00 CDT

Researchers in Finland have found patients who have type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease.

The study in the April issue of Diabetes Care is the first large prospective study to describe type 2 diabetes as a risk factor for Parkinson's disease.

The study found patients with type 2 diabetes were 83 percent more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson's than people in the general population. The incidence held for both men and women and despite other confounding factors.

Diabetes might increase the risk of Parkinson's disease partly through excess body weight, according to study author Dr. Gang Hu, senior researcher at the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki.
