Summary

Growing success of phytotherapy

Phytotherapy and other alternative therapies such as homeopathy, aromatherapy and acupuncture are attracting a growing number of customers. The development of chronic pathologies and psychological ailments which sometimes cannot be treated by normal medicine led to a switch in favour of therapies using herbal and natural products without any side effects.

Success of herbal medicines

Herbal medicines enjoyed a successful year in 2005. Boosted by the trend towards the consumption of healthy and natural products, herbal medicines are becoming increasingly popular. The trend seems to be a long-term one and not just a fashion. The sector leader, Arkopharma, built its success on Arkogélules, a range of 120 references in capsule format which are 100% herbal. It sells single plant extracts as well as mixes, which claim benefits for the skin, blood circulation, hair, digestion etc. The company owes its status to the fact that 50% of its products have an AMM (Autorisation de Mise sur le Marché -- market authorisation), similarly to standard medicines.

Herbal medicines are mainly sold in three formats: ampoules, capsules and herbal teas. Pharmacies remain the main channel, but supermarkets and hypermarkets are becoming serious competitors, especially for functional herbal teas.

Companies Mentioned Include:

- Bayer Santé Familiale

- Arkopharma SA

- Solvay Pharma

- Whitehall Laboratories Ltd

- UPSA UPSA, Laboratoires

- Boehringer Ingelheim France SAS

- Vitarmonyl, Laboratoires
