WASHINGTON, April 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Defense Health Board will hold a public meeting in Washington, DC on April 11, 2007. The focus of the afternoon session (2:00 pm - 4:00 pm) will include deliberation of draft findings and recommendations from The Independent Review Group to Report on Rehabilitative Care and Administrative Processes at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center. The Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health and the Task Force on the Future of Military Health Care also will provide updates on the progress of their reviews during the morning session (8:30 am - 11:30 am). While the public is welcome to attend, these meetings are working deliberations between the Defense Health Board and the three groups.
The Secretary of Defense created the Independent Review Group to look into the allegations of sub-standard living conditions and cumbersome administrative processes for soldiers at Walter Reed. These allegations appeared in a series of Washington Post articles in February 2007. Congress directed the other two Task Forces to conduct reviews and provide reports with findings and recommendations.
All three groups are subcommittees of the Defense Health Board and will make independent assessments and recommendations on changes to processes, legislation and policies, ultimately affecting care and services to the military community.
The full-day meeting will be held at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington, DC, 20307. Details on the meeting including how to register to attend can be found on the Defense Health Board web site at: http://www.ha.osd.mil/dhb.
Information on the Defense Health Board, each Task Force, and the Independent Review Group is available on the Board's web site.
The Department of Defense established the Defense Health Board Oct. 1, 2006, merging the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board, the Amputee Patient Care Program Board of Governors and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Scientific Advisory Board. The Defense Health Board was formed to provide the Secretary of Defense with independent advice and to perform a broad health-related mission that will enhance effectiveness and reduce administrative costs and requirements.
