Winners of the 2007 La Roche-Posay North American Foundation Award Announced at Gala Dinner in Washington, DC

NEW YORK, April 4 /PRNewswire/ — To further demonstrate La Roche-Posay’s commitment to the field of dermatology in North America and to continue to build strong partnerships with future leaders in this specialty, the La Roche- Posay North American Foundation awarded two research grants in 2007 to aspiring researchers in the field of dermatology.

First prize was awarded to Amanda Nelson, PhD from Penn State University for her abstract “Determining the mechanisms by which 13-cis retinoic acid suppresses sebum production”. Second prize was awarded to Sunil Kalia, MD from the University of British Columbia for his project, “Melanin Quantification: In vitro and in vivo analysis through infrared fluorescence and raman scattering”.

Dr. Amanda Nelson noted, “As a young scientist, receiving an award from the La-Roche Foundation enables me to pursue new avenues into researching how retinoids modulate skin physiology. This award is an important step towards establishing a successful career in dermatology research.”

The La Roche-Posay North American Foundation was established in 2005 to support outstanding candidates with promising projects in the field of clinical, biological or pharmacological research linked to dermatology. This competitive program is open to dermatology residents in the United States and Canada and entries are judged by members of the La Roche-Posay Scientific Committee comprised of academic thought leaders including: Committee President Henry Lim, MD (Henry Ford Medical Center), Amy Paller, MD (Northwestern University), Diane Thiboutot, MD (Penn State University), Anthony Benedetto, DO (University of Pennsylvania), Chuck Lynde, MD (2004 Canadian Dermatology Association President) and Yves Poulin, MD (Laval University, Quebec and Quebec City Dermatology Society President).

Grant proposals for 2008 should include: abstract (1 page), research plan and budget (10 pages maximum), curriculum vitae of the applicant, and a letter of support from mentor/chief of dermatology. It should be sent in duplicate before December 1, 2007 to:
