Susan G. Komen for the Cure Awards San Diego Organizations More Than $768,000 to Fight Breast Cancer

April 4, 2007

SAN DIEGO, April 4 /PRNewswire/ — The San Diego Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure today announced that it provided more than $768,000 to 20 breast health organizations in San Diego County to support outreach, education, treatment and services for uninsured or underinsured breast cancer patients and their families. The monies were raised by participants and sponsors of the 2006 San Diego Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in addition to many other fundraising events and individual contributions.

“There are more than 600,000 people without healthcare in San Diego County. Countless others are underinsured, and we want to make sure there are programs and services to provide breast health in our community,” said Tracy Richey, executive director of Komen for the Cure, San Diego. “This year, we were able to grant $100,000 more than last year — a record $768,000.”

Since its establishment in 1995, the San Diego Affiliate of Komen for the Cure has given almost $5 million to local organizations that have made valuable contributions to breast cancer diagnostics, treatment, education, screening and patient support.

The 2007 grants are going to local organizations providing for specific areas of help that were identified in an extensive community assessment taken by Komen for the Cure, San Diego. The assessment, taken every two years, provides direction for the non-profit organization’s work — establishing the need for fundraising, education programs, priorities for funding grants and as a guide to decision making.

“As the numbers of uninsured and underserved continue to increase in San Diego and nationwide, Komen for the Cure, San Diego will continue to expand its network of community outreach to help provide comprehensive, quality breast health to as many of those individuals as possible,” said Richey.
