ROSSLYN, Va., April 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Commission Co- Chairs Robert J. Dole and Donna E. Shalala announced today that Marie E. Michnich, Dr.P.H., has been named as the Executive Director of the President’s Commission on Care for America’s Returning Wounded Warriors.
“I have known Marie for many years, and she is certainly well- qualified to meet the challenges before this Commission,” said Senator Dole. “She is a person of great integrity and commitment, and a proven national leader in health and health care policy. Marie started her work in Washington in my Senate office, and I am grateful to be working with her again on this critical task.”
“The Commission is committed to delivering actionable recommendations to address the continuity of care that our service men and women receive,” said Secretary Shalala. “With Marie at the helm, the Commission is in good hands. Her leadership skills will help us as we work together to fulfill our important mission.”
Dr. Michnich will help implement the mission and goals of the President’s Commission, including supervising the administrative and logistical needs of the nine-member Commission, directing Commission staff, organizing Commission field hearings, and overseeing the preparation of the Report of the Commission, as stipulated by the President’s Executive Order.
A nationally recognized health care leader and policy strategist, Dr. Michnich brings years of personal and professional experiences to the Commission’s efforts. Her work spans a number of key health care and medical areas — including extensive experience in critical care nursing, health services research, and public and legislative policy. Her research and advocacy activities have centered on health care quality and, in particular, the role of the patient in defining and assessing quality of care.
Most recently, Dr. Michnich served as Director of Health Policy Education programs and fellowships for the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences. Prior to her work at the National Academies, Dr. Michnich served as Senior Executive for the Health Policy and the Clinical Practice and Scientific Services Divisions of the American College of Cardiology, where she focused on public and private sector health policy and quality of care issues. She first came to Washington, D.C. as an aide to U.S. Senator Robert J. Dole for health policy — including Medicare, Medicaid, and maternal and child health.
Issues related specifically to veterans’ medical care have also been a key part of Dr. Michnich’s personal life: her father was a wounded WWII veteran, and her husband — Dr. Bryan Luce — is a former Special Services officer and retired Army Reserve Medical Service Corps Officer. She is also a TriCare beneficiary, as well as a family nurse practitioner with special training in burn treatment.
Dr. Michnich received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Connecticut, a Master in Health Services Administration, and a Doctorate in Health Services Research from the University of California, Los Angeles.
