9/11 Neediest Medical Campaign Raises Nearly $4.7 Million for 9/11 Workers
Nine philanthropies and 205 individuals have contributed a final total of $4,665,930 to provide treatment for uninsured workers and downtown residents who have developed life-threatening diseases since the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. The total was reported by The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, which launched this 9/11 Neediest Medical campaign in February with a $1 million contribution from the Neediest Cases Fund endowment.
The funds will be divided between Mount Sinai Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center for uninsured patients in their extensive physical and mental health programs. A $100,000 grant will go to St. Vincent’s World Trade Center Healing Services for treatment of patients suffering major mental illnesses arising from Sept. 11.
Recent contributions or pledges to the campaign include $104,000 from the Star Ledger Disaster Relief Fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey; $100,000 from the Carnegie Corporation; and $112,000 from the 205 individual donors.
Prior participants in the campaign are the Ford Foundation, the Open Society Institute and the New York Community Trust, with $1 million each; the Altman Foundation, $250,000; and the United Way of New York City, $75,000. Trinity Church Wall Street made an initial contribution of $25,000 and will also accept contributions from the public at its Ground Zero exhibition in St. Paul’s Chapel.
The New York Community Trust grant, approved by its board Friday, will be divided between Bellevue and Beyond Ground Zero, a community service organization which works with Bellevue to aid people affected by the 9/11 disaster.
