Apr. 13–Preparedness for flu is subject of seminar

The Chickahominy Health District and churches of the Hanover County Christian Church Disciples of Christ will sponsor a pandemic flu preparedness seminar April 20 at 7 p.m.

The seminar will be held at Trinity Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 8469 Atlee Road in Mechanicsville. Pandemic flu is a global outbreak of disease that occurs when a new Influenza A virus appears in humans, causing serious illness and spreading easily from person to person worldwide.

The seminar will be led by Steve Harrison, assistant state exercise and strategic national stockpile coordinator for the Virginia Department of Health’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Department; and Becky Lyttle, registered nurse and pandemic flu coordinator for the Chickahominy Health District, which serves Hanover, Charles City, Goochland and New Kent counties.

Hanover businesses invited to workshop

Hanover County businesses are invited to attend a pandemic flu and emergency planning seminar April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Richmond Times-Dispatch Hanover plant at Atlee Station. The seminar will help business owners prepare for a health crisis that could affect many, if not most, of their employees and customers.For details visit www.vdh.virginia.gov/pandemicflu or www.pandemicflu.gov. Civil War expert will speak on Fort Pillow

Brian Steel Wills, Kenneth Asbury Professor of History at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and author of “The Confederacy’s Greatest Cavalryman: Nathan Bedford Forrest,” will give a talk titled “Fort Pillow — Massacre?” tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Pamplin Historical Park’s Education Center.

After the talk, visitors can participate in a question-and-answer session. Wills will be available to sign his new book from 11 a.m. to noon, and after the lecture from 3-4 p.m. The program is free with paid park admission (free for park members).

Daily admission for adults is $13.50, seniors $12, children (6-11) $7.50, and children under 6 enter free.

Chesterfield students to sponsor plant sale

Perennials, annuals, herbs, vegetables, mixed containers and hanging baskets will be available at the Chesterfield Technical Center’s annual sale of plants grown by students enrolled in greenhouse management/floral design and landscaping courses.

The sale will be held April 27 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and continue on school days through May 18, with plants available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Chesterfield Technical Center is at 10101 Courthouse Road. Plant-sale shoppers can go directly to the greenhouse entrance.

Students will use proceeds from the sale for community-service projects. For details, call 768-6160, ext. 1037.

Hanover officers to enforce dog tag rules

Hanover County animal-control officers will be making visits to selected neighborhoods beginning April 30. Dogs four months and up are required to have tags and a valid license, which shows the dog has been vaccinated for rabies.

Failure to have purchased a dog tag means a $25 fine.A license costs $6. Tags are on sale throughout the year and must be on the dog. Any dog found without a valid Hanover dog tag is considered unlicensed until his owner can prove otherwise. For details, call Hanover Animal Control at 365-6485.
