Picis, Inc., an established provider of high-acuity care information systems for hospitals, today announced the signing of Inova Health System in the Northern Virginia area, and Exempla Healthcare of Colorado. These two large hospital networks selected the Picis ED PulseCheck® emergency department information system (EDIS) to automate more than 400,000 emergency department patient visits per year, adding to a national network of nearly 20 IDN-affiliated hospitals using ED PulseCheck.
"With various facilities across our diverse health system, Inova needed an emergency department information system that would allow us to easily share data between providers, from any emergency department location," said Laurie Eccleston, R.N., M.P.A., information technology applications spokesperson, Inova Health System. "This selection process was a very collaborative effort between our clinicians and information technology department, coming together as a team to recognize their needs and identify the best system and technology for meeting those needs."
Inova Health System is nationally recognized for its implementation and use of technology. The ED PulseCheck agreement includes Inova Health System hospitals and emergency care centers across Northern Virginia. In addition, Inova has selected Picis' Business Transformation Services to help transform its care process and promote increased revenue capture through more accurate and automated coding.
"Picis ED PulseCheck provides the best technology available to further enhance the productivity of our emergency department physicians and nurses and help them improve patient care," said Dave Pecoraro, chief information officer, Exempla Healthcare. "ED PulseCheck also provides our administrative and management teams with the data and tools to report on core measures and increase operational efficiency at our hospitals." Exempla Healthcare hospitals implementing ED PulseCheck include Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo. and Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo. The network has also engaged Picis Business Transformation Services.
Designed by and for emergency department clinicians, ED PulseCheck is a native Web-based system that combines patient tracking, physician and nursing documentation, charge management, order entry and risk management. Picis' technology integrates voice recognition, the intuitive PicisPen™ input device and biometric authentication. In addition, Picis provides integration with existing hospital information systems. Inova Health System is installing the entire ED PulseCheck suite of products, including physician and nurse documentation and the PicisPen. "Picis was chosen for its robust functionality, Web-based architecture, risk management capabilities, and tools to generate and customize reports quickly and easily. Their easy-to-use, intuitive user interface provides multiple methods for busy clinicians to automate their workflow and documentation," adds Eccleston.
Exempla Healthcare has selected the complete ED PulseCheck suite, as well as the Rapid Clinical Record for use in both facilities. This bridge to the Meditech hospital information system enables physicians and nurses to access a patient's medical history quickly and easily with one link, helping to promote more informed decision making in the fast-paced ED environment.
"The emergency department in today's healthcare system is extremely busy and is central to the hospital's core business," said Todd Cozzens, president and chief executive officer, Picis. "This demanding environment requires specialized tools for automation transformation from proven experts. Inova and Exempla are examples of dynamic organizations that see the ED as a portal to their community and both saw the need to go beyond their core IT vendors to select a system that can help address these needs and integrate with their existing IT infrastructure."
