In June 2006, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to recommend the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer and other diseases in females caused by certain types of genital human papillomavirus. The HPV vaccine protects against four HPV types, which together, cause 70% of cervical cancers.
There are bills being submitted in legislative bodies all over the country, which would make the HPV vaccine mandatory for girls entering junior high school. In an encore broadcast of this special edition of Your Cancer Today(TM), we explore all sides of this issue.
