Eli Lilly said Wednesday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Reconcile for treatment of separation anxiety in dogs.
Reconcile -- which has the same active ingredient as Prozac -- is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant. The chewable, flavored tablet is now available to U.S. veterinarians.
Lilly research shows that 10.7 million, or up to 17 percent of U.S. dogs suffer from separation anxiety, said Steve Connell, Lilly's manager of technical, academic and consumer services for companion animal health. We're thrilled that our first product for dogs can help restore the human-pet bond, which can be compromised when dogs suffer from separation anxiety.
The approval is supported by field studies involving approximately 600 dogs that found that 73 percent of dogs receiving Reconcile showed improvement in separation anxiety-related behavior compared to those receiving behavior training alone.
The most common adverse effects included lethargy, vomiting, shaking, diarrhea, excessive vocalization, aggression and seizures.
