WASHINGTON, April 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Minority Quality Forum yesterday honored Senator Jeff Sessions with the Health Promotion and Disease Awareness Award. This award recognizes an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to providing optimal health and medical care services for a diverse society.
"Senator Sessions' efforts were extremely vital to the passage of the Ryan White CARE Act," said Dr. Gary Puckrein, CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum. "This important legislation will ensure that low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS will have access to life-saving medications and treatment. Additionally, the CARE Act will provide funding for HIV screening and education as part of routine medical care."
"When you consider that almost half of all new HIV infections are caused by the individuals who are unaware of their HIV status, the CARE Act is vital legislation in combating this disease, and we applaud Senator Sessions for his contributions," continued Puckrein.
The Health Promotion and Disease Awareness Award was presented at the National Leadership Summit awards dinner at the fourth annual Leadership Summit on Health Disparities. This year's summit brought together over four hundred minority health advocates including senior representatives from the healthcare industry; local, state and federal government policymakers; physicians; and national patient advocacy and faith-based organizations to support the implementation of solutions to eliminate health disparities among minorities. Senator Sessions received this award along with Senator Richard Burr and Senator Tom Coburn.
About the National Minority Quality Forum
NMQF (founded as the National Minority Health Month Foundation) was established in 1998 to strengthen national and local efforts to eliminate the disproportionate burden of premature death and preventable illness in racial and ethnic minorities and other special populations. It launched National Minority Health Month in April 2001 in response to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2010 Initiative to promote health and prevent disease. Each April, NMQF hosts the national leadership summit and awards dinner that brings together congressional leaders, government officials, physicians, representatives of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, and other critical stakeholders to find integrated solutions to minority health disparities.
