Posted on: Wednesday, 25 April 2007, 15:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, April 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Minority Quality Forum yesterday honored Senator Tom Coburn with the Health Promotion and Disease Awareness Award for his service and commitment to improving quality of healthcare.

"As a physician and senator, Tom Coburn has demonstrated tremendous leadership in improving access to quality healthcare for all," said Dr. Gary Puckrein, CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum. "We are recognizing Senator Coburn for his efforts to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in infants and for ensuring passage of the Ryan White CARE Act."

"HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects African Americans and Hispanics," continued Puckrein. "The National Minority Quality Forum is pleased to acknowledge Tom Coburn and his accomplishments that have had a real impact in the minority community."

The Health Promotion and Disease Awareness Award was presented at the National Leadership Summit awards dinner at the fourth annual Leadership Summit on Health Disparities. This year's summit brought together over four hundred minority health advocates including senior representatives from the healthcare industry; local, state and federal government policymakers; physicians; and national patient advocacy and faith-based organizations to support the implementation of solutions to eliminate health disparities among minorities. Senator Coburn received this award along with Senator Richard Burr and Senator Jeff Sessions.

About the National Minority Quality Forum

NMQF (founded as the National Minority Health Month Foundation) was established in 1998 to strengthen national and local efforts to eliminate the disproportionate burden of premature death and preventable illness in racial and ethnic minorities and other special populations. It launched National Minority Health Month in April 2001 in response to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2010 Initiative to promote health and prevent disease. Each April, NMQF hosts the national leadership summit and awards dinner that brings together congressional leaders, government officials, physicians, representatives of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, and other critical stakeholders to find integrated solutions to minority health disparities.
