WALES: Plaid to Give Pledge on Nurse Numbers

PATIENTS in Wales should have a legal right to a proper number of nurses staffing their hospital wards, Plaid Cymru will claim today.

The party will pledge to include the demand in a Patient Rights Contract if it comes to power in the Assembly elections next week.

The contract would set out the minimumstaff that are required in different parts of the Welsh NHS.

Plaid shadowhealthminister Helen Mary Jones said: “Inadequate number of nurses has been proved to pose a threat to patient safety and quality of care.”

The Royal College of Nurses last week called for UK-wide laws to ensure a proper ratio of nurses to the number of patients.
