Two $1 Million Centennial Awards Mark Medical Milestone Advance Search For a Cure

In 1906, Alois Alzheimer, a German physician, identified a degenerative disease that caused brain cells to die, affecting a person’s ability to think and function. A century after this historic discovery, the Alzheimer’s Disease Research program is committing to the future promise of scientific research by granting two one million dollar Centennial Awards. Dr. Bradley T. Hyman of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and Dr. Donald Weaver from Dalhousie University in Canada are the recipients of the grants, but the real winners are those who believe in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is now estimated to affect more than 5 million people in the U.S. and 18 million worldwide. One in eight Americans age 65 and over, and nearly one in two over age 85 have Alzheimer’s, and the numbers at risk will continue to grow substantially. Research is key to finding a cure for this devastating disease.
