Study: Radiation Not Linked to Heart Risk

Posted on: Friday, 4 May 2007, 15:00 CDT

Elderly U.S. women who receive radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer appear to have no increased risk of a heart attack, a study found.

Researchers at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University in New York conducted a retrospective study of female Medicare recipients ages 65 and older who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1992 and 2000.

Lead author John Doyle reviewed the records of more than 48,000 breast-cancer patients; of those women, 19,897 had lumpectomies and 26,534 had mastectomies.

Forty-five percent in the study received radiation therapy and 9 percent received both radiation and chemotherapy. Patients with pre-existing heart disease were less likely to receive radiation.

The study, published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, showed elderly women who receive radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer appear to have no increased risk of a heart attack after taking pre-existing cardiac risk factors into account.
