4 ‘Legends’ Honored for Their Generosity
The gorgeous cliffside gardens of Ana and Max Negri will be the setting for “Legends in Our Time,” a celebration honoring the “generous hearts” of four prominent Peninsula women. The second annual “Legends,” a benefit for the Affinity Group of The Volunteer Center, will be at 6:30 p.m. May 16.
The four legends are Barbara Dye, Arline Grotz, Sharon Ryan and Susan Seager. All longtime Peninsula residents and fervent volunteers, their service in a multitude of nonprofit organizations totals a collective 120 years-plus.
Linda Richardson is event chairwoman and Susie Beall is honorary chairwoman. A selection of gourmet entrees will be prepared by chef Michael Shafer of the Depot restaurant in Torrance, and there will be a silent auction.
Tickets are $75. Proceeds will help the Affinity Group purchase and stock more than 1,000 backpacks, filled with school supplies, to be donated to students in need in South Bay schools. For reservations or information, call 310-377-2141.
Wearable art at PVAC
Not all art is meant to be displayed — some is intended to be worn, such as the outfits available for purchase from The Artists Studio, a cooperative of artists affiliated with the Palos Verdes Art Center.
You can view the one-of-a-kind handiwork at the annual Signatures spring fashion show of wearable art, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the art center. Included will be 70 ensembles for day and evening, including clothing, accessories and jewelry by more than 20 artists. Guests also will enjoy a catered champagne luncheon.
Tickets, at $35, must be purchased in advance either at The Artists’ Studio at the PVAC, 5504 W. Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes; or by mailing a check to P.O. Box 2298, Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA 90274. If purchasing by mail, enclose a self- addressed, stamped envelope. For more information, call The Artists’ Studio, 310-541-2479.
Ride to Fly carnival
Corral the kids and bring them to the 2nd Annual Country Carnival and Silent Auction from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, for a day of fun at the Empty Saddle Club, 39 Empty Saddle Road, Rolling Hills Estates.
The public is invited to this Western-style benefit for Ride to Fly, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults with disabilities. RTF instructors are trained and certified in equine therapy and riding techniques. Horses are selected for their calm and gentle natures.
Admission is $25, $15 for children, and includes Harry’s Famous BBQ beef, chicken or vegan dinner with dessert, dancing to live music with the Merchants of Moonshine, country line-dancing lessons, an opportunity drawing, a raffle and a silent action. Help for travelers
The Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles is looking for volunteers with good people skills, a calm demeanor, a good sense of humor and a knack for solving problems to assist travelers at Los Angeles International Airport or Union Station. Volunteers are asked to donate four hours a week staffing information booths and assisting travelers with accommodations, transportation and sightseeing information, and acting as liaisons to professional society workers.

Salvation Army
Volunteers are so important to the day-to-day operation of the Salvation Army of Torrance that the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army honors them every year with its Partners in Service luncheon.
This year’s event is at noon May 17 and will honor members of the community “who have made a difference in the lives of others.” Gene Barnett, Torrance’s director of parks and recreation, will be the guest speaker.
Volunteers work in areas such as the adult day-care program, a preschool facility, counseling, food and gift programs and social service referrals. The luncheon is at the Salvation Army, 4223 Emerald St., Torrance. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. For information, call Pete Warner, 310-370-4515, Ext. 104.
South Bay Hands On Art
Last year’s inaugural benefit for South Bay Hands On Art, “Picasso & Pizza Party,” was such as big hit for artists and guests that the group is holding its second annual Picasso party for families from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza in Rolling Hills Plaza, Torrance.
The benefit will support Hands On Art programs for elementary schools in Redondo Beach and outreach programs in Compton and Hawthorne. Sammy’s is donating the venue and food and beverage costs.
Highlights include face-painting, a display of student artwork, a community art project, musical entertainment and a silent auction of student art.
All proceeds will go to Hands On Art, an organization of parent volunteers who serve as art docents within classrooms. This program has provided art in schools for more than 20 years and reaches out to other areas with less parent participation.
Admission is $25 per person, $40 for a pair and $50 for a family of up to four (with an additional $10 for extra children). To purchase tickets, call Michelle Solley at 310-372-4401.
