Keystone Mercy Health Plan Receives Thomson Healthcare Innovator Award

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 May 2007, 15:00 CDT

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Keystone Mercy Health Plan was honored Monday for its innovative use of healthcare data analytics to achieve significant clinical and business results. Keystone, a Pennsylvania Medicaid HMO serving 300,000 members, received the fourth annual Innovator Award from Thomson Healthcare, a business unit of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSK: TOC). The award was presented in San Antonio at Connection 2007, the annual Thomson Healthcare customer conference attended by many of the nation's largest healthcare "payer" organizations - including health plans, government agencies, and large employers.

Keystone's winning initiative resulted in improved quality of life for chronically ill individuals while saving $7.8 million annually. The health plan adopted a proactive approach to case management - a strategy that targeted high-risk members with multiple chronic conditions and co- morbidities. These individuals represent a relatively small volume of Keystone's membership but use a disproportionately high volume of medical resources. Keystone found that 2 percent of the total member population was responsible for 14 percent of the plan's costs.

The Keystone case management initiative resulted in more effective care for plan members who benefited from ongoing guidance, screening and attention, as well as more efficient use of resources. The health plan used sophisticated analyses of medical claims data to identify members who would benefit from case management and to monitor and measure the program's progress.

"The Thomson Healthcare Innovator Award program honors organizations that tackle the challenges facing the healthcare system with creative solutions," said Jon Newpol, Thomson Healthcare executive vice president. "Keystone Mercy Health Plan is a leader in using data analytics to create pioneering initiatives that control the cost and improve the quality of healthcare."

Keystone was selected from a field of five Innovator Award finalists. The other finalists and their nominated projects are as follows:

-- FedEx Express initiated an incentive program to encourage employees with diabetes to manage their disease through healthy behavior. -- HCA, composed of locally managed facilities that include 172 hospitals and 103 outpatient centers, developed "dashboard reports" that translate data into easy-to-read graphical reports that enhance communication, inform decision makers, and save money. -- Liberty Mutual saved its California workers' compensation customers $10 million by managing physician-dispensed drugs. -- The Office of the Inspector General of the State of Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration increased Medicaid fraud detection and prosecution using rigorous data mining.
