SCAN Health Plan Celebrates 30th Anniversary With Southern California Enrollment Topping 100,000

LONG BEACH, Calif., May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- SCAN Health Plan marked its 30th anniversary with the announcement that enrollment has topped 100,000 members in Southern California. In doing so, SCAN remains one of the fastest-growing and most successful Medicare Advantage plans in the state.
"A lot has changed in the Medicare environment over the past three decades," said David Schmidt, chief executive officer of SCAN. "One thing that hasn't changed is the desire of seniors to retain their health and independence. Helping our members achieve this has always been and will always continue to be SCAN's overriding mission."
SCAN's heritage bears this out. The not-for-profit health plan was founded in 1977 by a group of local seniors who were frustrated by their lack of access to services and who wanted an organization that addressed their specific needs. Those seniors formed the Senior Care Action Network, now known as SCAN Health Plan, to focus exclusively on the Medicare market. The goal of the organization then was the same as it is today.
"As people age, their need of and reliance on healthcare expands exponentially," said Schmidt. "With the population aging at a rapid pace, it is more important than ever that our society increase its focus on the special needs of seniors. At SCAN we look forward to another 30 years of serving seniors with compassion, respect and dignity."
SCAN currently serves Medicare-eligible individuals in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura and Kern counties. SCAN also manages one of the largest and most successful Multi-Purpose Senior Service Projects (MSSP) in California providing community-based, long-term care and in-home personal-care coordination for low-income frail seniors. In addition, SCAN provides long-term care services to low-income elderly and physically disabled individuals enrolled in the Arizona Long-Term Care System program in Maricopa County. This year the health plan further expanded its presence in Arizona with a health plan for Medicare and Medicaid-eligible individuals.
